White House sources have confirmed an alarming report that suggested that US government computers, including systems used by the military, were breached by hackers based in China.
A law enforcement official, who works with members of the White House Military Office, confirmed the Chinese attack, but it remains unclear what information, if any, was taken, or left behind.
"This was a spear phishing attack against an unclassified network. These types of attacks are not infrequent, and, we have mitigation measures in place," the White House official toldFox News.
A law enforcement source said that a White House Communications Agency man 'opened an e-mail he wasn't supposed to open'.
That email contained a spear phishing attack from a computer server in China, the source added.
The attack was first reported by the conservative blog Free Beacon.
The law enforcement source said that he was notified of the successfulphishing incident, but did not know what information was actually accessed.
Meanwhile, a White House official downplayed that report, saying that the system involved was not a sensitive nuclear system, and no evidence indicated that information was actually taken.
