Women have been signing up in big numbers, with instructors saying they are receiving an unprecedented number of calls from women afraid of being snatched off the streets.
"I felt like it could have been me, or any of my friends. It made me think how often I take my personal safety for granted," Ms Umilio said.
The Melbourne woman has signed on at Guardian Self-Defence for a crash course in personal safety.
"My main goal is to learn how to react in case I am being attacked. I have no idea how I would react if someone came to me with a knife or a gun," she said.
Guardian director A.J. Kearns says it has had hundreds of clients sign up in the past week.
"It has been an absolute flood," Ms Kearns said.
"We run a regular women's self-defence course, which would normally have a dozen in it. It sold out in a week at 45. We have had over 150 sign up in one week," she sai
