Intel will be released a specialised tablet for manufacturers to base future development on. Called the “Intel Reference Design For Android”, the device will be the most stable operating environment Intel can come up with and will receive constant updates. Created in conjunction with Google, the company intends for the reference tablet to function as a guideline for manufacturers to build future Android products based on its technology.
Using pre-approved components allows Intel to promise that the reference design will pass Google Media Services standards; which is intended to make it easy for OEMs to build their own products on the base model without worrying about Google’s approval. Intel will keep the reference as up to date as it can, and devices in the programme will receive ASOP updates within two weeks of any releases.
The reference tablet not only serves as a starting point for OEMs to build Intel powered tablets, but also as a platform for the manufacturer to push its own technologies. Intel’s RealSense camera is the start of this process, although there is no word of any other features to be found on tablet. Developers will have to wait a bit longer to get involved in the programme as Intel has not revealed a starting date for registration, but it shouldn’t be that long with the RealSense technology already making a debut on the Dell Venue 8 7000 tablet later this year.
