AMERICAN PHONE MAKER Motorola Mobility announced on Wednesday that it plans to buy face recognition firm Viewdle to bring better imaging smarts to Android and Google+. "Motorola Mobility today announced that it has acquired Viewdle, a leading imaging and gesture recognition company," Motorola said in a statement sent to Techcrunch. "Motorola and Viewdle have an existing commercial agreement and have been collaborating for some time." Launched in 2007, Viewdle specialises in face recognition software through "camera based innovations in augmented reality, device, and social networking." The firm has some big name investors, including Best Buy Capital, Qualcomm and Blackberry Partners Fund. Although Motorola revealed no further details of the buyout, it's likely that Google will use Viewdle's technology in its Android operating system and for a possible camera boost on Motorola handsets. There's also a possibility that Google will integrate the technology into its Google+ social network, following in the footsteps of rival Facebook, which uses facial recognition technology for tagging people in images posted by its members. Although Motorola did not disclose the terms of the deal, it's thought that Google's Motorola Mobility subsidiary will likely cough up between $30 to $45 million to acquire Viewdle. ยต
