Apple has responded to the iOS 8.0.1 update bug, which saw iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices lose cellular connectivity and Touch ID functionality when applied, with an apology and a promise to correct things in an 8.0.2 update to come sometime “in the next few days.” The apology is accompanied by instructions on Apple’s official support website, telling affected users how to easily roll back to iOS 8.0 without losing their content or having to restore their phones.
The official Apple statement on the matter (via Recode) follows:
We apologize for the great inconvenience experienced by users, and are working around the clock to prepare iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue. And will release it as soon as it is ready in the next few days
Apple’s support document detailing the step-by-step instructions for repealing the update and returning your affected device to iOS 8 lists the same process we discovered yesterday for fixing our own bugged iPhone 6 hardware: Downloading the full iPhone 6 or 6 Plus .IPSW iOS disk image, and then manually installing it via iTunes using Option-click and the “Check for Update” button on your phone’s info screen in Apple’s media app. The full instructions follow, direct from Apple’s website:
Follow these steps to reinstall iOS 8.0.
- Make sure that you’re using the latest version of iTunes.
- Connect your iPhone to iTunes.
- Back up your iPhone in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iCloud backups won’t restore to earlier versions, including iOS 8.0.
- Download the file below that corresponds to your device:iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus - Select the file you just downloaded by doing one of these in iTunes:
- Mac: Press the Option key and click Check for Update.
- Windows: Press the Shift key and click Check for Update.
- Press Update to install iOS 8 on your iPhone.
